Cal likes to reach out to people.
Put Joe B. Hall in that group. The current and former UK Coach have become good friends.
Cal gives Hall credit for some suggestions on offense that the Cats are now using. Hall downplays his role.
"He does that," says Hall.
"I don't have that kind of influence. Cal is capable. I'd be embarrassed to offer him a suggestion."
The 1978 NCAA Champs from UK have never received enough credit as one of the greatest teams of all time.
Through the years, doing interviews with many of the players from '78, they believe they could play with and beat the best from today or 40 years ago.
Think about the speed of Wall and Bledsoe. Who wins the battle, 1978 or this years Cats.
"Oh gosh, you asked the wrong guy," says Joe B.
"What do you think I'd say. We'd blow them out. That's obvious."
Joe B. was smiling when he said it. Two things about Hall. He might believe what he said, but he is so classy, he would never brag or touch the question.
In the process of not answering, Joe said something about this years team that Bobby Knight might not like.
"I think that this team, if it stayed together for four years would be maybe, the greatest team to ever play."
Wow! Greatest ever? Joe B. was on a roll.
"Better than those big UCLA teams. The undefeated Indiana team. Any of them. I think this team has so much talent. They are so entertaining."
Life is great for Hall. His son in law, Mike Summers is taking over the offensive line for Joker Phillips At UK.
Many times, when Louisville was sticking it to UK, I said that the strength of the Cards was their offensive line. Summers did a great job with Louisville.
This is a smart hire by Joker. Plus, how many coaches get to come home to work.
"It's a blessing in coaching. Not only for you personally, but your family. And your families family."
"It's just great having Mike Summers back here in Kentucky. I have been a fan of his as a coach ever since he began."
"To have him here at Kentucky is the ultimate."
Hall quickly said yes when asked if this move was one of the great blessings of his life.
"Well, it is. It's one of the best things to ever happen to me. This is the completion of a dream."
