He's thought about it, talked to those he's close to about it, and then decided to go for it.
It isn't Jon Hood's style, but if you believe that college is a time for personal growth, Hood learned a great lesson while waiting his turn.
Everyone wants to play. Give Hood some credit for stepping forward.
"Scared money don't make no money," says the sharp shooting freshman.
"If you are scared you ain't going to get no where in life. So, that's what Coach Antigua said. You go in and do what you have to do, and say what you have to say and see what the outcome is."
With the in mind, Hood went to Cal while he was on the treadmill watching tape of Georgia. This from a player whose played only 10 minutes since the beginning of 2010, and in 29 games, the biggest stat for Hood is DNP. That's did not play.
"I just walked in, and me being not shy, said I'd like to play more."
Cal liked what he heard.
"He just came in and said coach I can guard this guy and that guy, and I will make shots," says Cal.
"I said you know what, I need to give you a chance. So, we will see how things play out."
"But, I love it when guys have that attitude, let me get in there and do it. Cause then it is not on me, it's on them."
Some might think because the Cats were 2 for 22 from downtown against Tennessee, and because this shooting slump now has legs, that's why Hood went to Cal.
Hood says that's not true. He just thinks he can help the team in many ways. But, he also admits that for today, being labeled as a shooter, isn't a bad thing.
Hood believes he's a much better player since we've seen him. Lifting weights, getting up extra shots and playing against Wall and Bledsoe and Liggins in practice has pushed him.
"Some points I would say intimidate. When you are bringing the ball up against John Wall, Eric Bledsoe and DeAndre (Liggins) every day, you are going to get intimidated whether it's going to be fouling or physical play. Whatever it is."
It's the practice that has Wall believing he's ready to be successful against Georgia Wednesday night.
