COVINGTON, Ky. (AP) - A judge in Covington has sharply criticized Kentucky's youth protection agency during a hearing in a child death.
Kenton County District Judge Ken Easterling presided Wednesday at a hearing for 26-year-old Megin Gray whose 9-month-old daughter died after becoming wedged between a mattress and a wall, atop a baseboard heater.
Easterling castigated the Cabinet for Health and Family Services for having six contacts with Gray before the infant's death, but not removing the baby or two other children from the home.
The judge said the agency is shrouded in secrecy and challenged the cabinet to become more transparent, The Kentucky Enquirer reported.
Cabinet official Jim Grace was at the hearing, but left without comment. The assistant counsel for the agency has filed a motion to keep its file on Gray closed.
