FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - The number of highway fatalities in Kentucky is down for 2009, but the same didn't hold for the New Year's holiday weekend.
Kentucky State Police report preliminary numbers indicate five people died in five crashes during the long holiday weekend, compared with four during the same enforcement period last year.
For 2009, 771 people were killed on Kentucky roads, or 55 fewer than 2008.
State police says the statistics are preliminary, with the agency still awaiting information from all local law enforcement agencies.
