A fire engulfed the Whitley-Knox Animal Shelter Friday night.
Firefighters were called to the scene in Woodbine around 9:30 p.m. When firefighters arrived on scene, the building was fully involved.
The Woodbine Fire Chief tells LEX 18 it took about two hours to get the fire under control due to the amount of smoke and fire crews ran out of water during one point of the fight.
Fire crews say the shelter is considered a total loss.
Firefighters say they were able to save at least 10 dogs and eight cats.
The animals rescued will be taken to the Knox County Veterinary Service and will be contacting rescue groups to help with the displaced animals.
The shelter is asking for donations to help. Donations can be made to any branch of Forcht Bank.
