On Friday morning, members of the Lafayette High School band left for California to participate in the Tournament of Roses Parade.
The "Pride of the Bluegrass" will perform its field show Sunday and March in the storied parade on Jan. 1.
All 220 band members, their chaperons and staff took off from Blue Grass Airport in four groups. About 230 family members and friends will bus to Chicago or Indianapolis to catch direct flights to Southern California.
Lafayette band director Chuck Smith calls it a once in a lifetime experience.
"For a big chunk of our kids, this is the first time that they're going to fly, ever, and for many experiences, this may be their first and only experience ever to be in California, Los Angeles, to see the Pacific Ocean."
Lafayette will be the last band in the parade and will appear on TV around 12:45 p.m. EST in New Years Day.
You can watch a livestream of the band's field performance Sunday at around 2 p.m. EST at www.lafayetteband.org.
