Beginning today, texting and driving in Kentucky could get you in trouble with the law.

Legislation making the distracting practice illegal goes into effect Thursday. Gov. Steve Beshear signed the bill into law last April. It also bans cell phone use for drivers under 18-years-old.

The law allows two exceptions. Drivers can text to report illegal activity, or to request medical or emergency aid.

Police will issue warnings until Jan. 1. After that, drivers texting and driving will face tickets and fines.

After the first of the year, texting drivers caught by police will face a $25 fine plus court costs for the first offense, $50 for the second.
