Lexington Athlete Named Special Olympics Kentucky 2013 Athlete of the Year

Frankfort, Ky. - Jerhmoll Carter of Lexington has been named the Special Olympics Kentucky 2013 Athlete of the Year. The award was presented in Frankfort on Saturday, January 18, at the Special Olympics Kentucky State Leadership Conference. The award recognizes an athlete who exemplifies the Spirit of Special Olympics by demonstrating skill, positive sportsmanship and courage.

Carter, 33, has been a Special Olympics athlete for more than 20 years. He currently competes in basketball and softball and has participated in track and field in the past.

In Carter's nomination letter, coach Brent Wallace said, "Jerhmoll is the definition of a Special Olympics athlete. He comes to each and every practice, game and social activity we offer. When Jerhmoll is around, he makes everyone around him a better person, especially myself.

"In his time with Special Olympics, Jerhmoll is always very positive and very cooperative," Wallace continued. "His hard work rubs off on all of his teammates. He is the first to greet his teammates, coaches and friends, and he is the first to congratulate someone on a job well done, even if it's the other team's player after making a shot against him. He doesn't focus on winning or losing, but about how well we all go in the process. Jerhmoll is a competitor, bust most of all, he is an inspiration."

Carter is a cafeteria worker at Bryan Station High School in Lexington, where helps with clean up duties and dishwashing.

In addition to the Athlete of the Year Award, Special Olympics Kentucky also named its 2013 Coach of the Year Award at the same dance. That honor went to Laura Miller of Murray, who serves as the Local Coordinator for Murray/Calloway County Special Olympics. Miller coaches track and field and bowling and will serve as the Team Kentucky track and field coach at the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games this June in New Jersey. Miller was also a finalist for the 2013 Special Olympics North America Coach of the Year award.
