An off-duty firefighter rescued a child who fell through an ice-covered pond Friday afternoon in the Andover area in Lexington.
Officials say the boy was rescued by off-duty battalion chief Brian Wood, who was heading to the movies with his daughter near Andover Forest when the call went out about someone falling through the ice in the area.
The firefighter then went to the pond to help rescue the boy, who officials said was stuck in three feet of mud.
Police officers on scene tried to throw a line to the boy, but he couldn't grab the line because he was too cold. Wood then decided to attach a line to himself and get the boy.
The child was taken to UK Hospital to be checked out.
