A Lexington man found guilty in November of first-degree manslaughter in the 2009 death of his girlfriend was sentenced to 50 years in prison Friday.
Police say Edward Stokley, 35, shot Lavena Gibson, 25, four times on April 29, 2009 at a home on Bishop Drive. Police say Gibson had a rocky relationship with Stokley, and had gone to the home to end the relationship and retrieve her belongings when Stokley shot her.
Stokley was originally charged with murder in the case, and never denied that he shot Gibson. He was also found not guilty of three counts of wanton endangerment.
The jury recommended 20 years in prison, enhanced to 50 years because Stokley is a persistent felony offender.
