Lexington Mother Defends Man Accused Of Killing Her Infant Son

A Lexington mother says her newborn baby's accused killer was forced to confess to the crime.

Caz Hazuga was charged Friday with the murder of his one-month-old son. The boy, Caz Hazuga Jr. died Thanksgiving morning following what police said was abuse at the family's home on Henton Road.

According to a police report, Hazuga "admitted to intentionally causing the death of his one-month-old" son by striking his head on the kitchen counter.

"Not even a day after your son's death, and you're sitting there being called a monster, saying, 'You're a murderer. You're a murderer.' And then you threaten to put a man's wife in jail. He's gonna confess to something. He's gonna say what they want to hear," the child's mother, Angelina Rushing told LEX 18. "The only confession they got was him saying, 'If that's what you think happened, then that's what you think happened. That's what happened.' That's not a confession."

Rushing said she was in the home when the incident occurred.

"I woke up to my husband telling me to look, he's not breathing. So I took him and started giving him CPR. My brother-in-law called 911," Rushing said.

The boy was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead about 30 minutes later.

Hazuga was taken in for questioning. Rushing said she went with Hazuga and was in the next room while police conducted their interrogation.

"I listened in on what they were saying to him. All I kept hearing was them repeating, 'Was it an accident? Was it an accident?' And my husband saying, 'No I just put him on my lap and swaddled him,'" Rushing said.

The couple also has a one-year-old daughter who they said was examined after the incident and determined to be in good health.

Hazuga is scheduled to appear in court Monday.
