The Fayette County Coroner has identified a man who died shortly after being found with a gunshot wound Wednesday morning.
Officials say 47-year-old Anthony Carter is the man found lying on the street at Fourth and Chestnut streets around 5:40 a.m. He was pronounced dead at 6:16 a.m. shortly after being taken to the hospital.
His death is being investigated by Lexington Police as a homicide and police have not yet named a suspect in the case. They say they've heard from witnesses who described a man on a bicycle leaving the scene right after a single shot was fired.
As the investigation continues, the flashing lights and police tape in the area are an unfortunate sign of a step backward in the progress so many have made to clean up this part of town.
"We love this neighborhood," said Billie Mallory. "People live here because they love it. And we want people to be able to stay here."
Mallory came out to check on a friend who lives on the street, and she's also part of a group called Central Kentucky Council for Peace and Justice. They've organized clean-ups, meetings with police and council members - anything to make the area safer.
She called what happened there Wednesday morning unsettling and counter productive.
