Lightning ignited a 300-year-old tree near a historic Scott County home, and a falling limb hit a man trying to put out that fire on the head.

The owner of the Thornwood Home on Bethel Road says a lightning bolt hit the white ash tree about 3 a.m. The lightning sparked a fire dangerously close to power lines leading to the house. The man pulled out a garden hose and tried to put out the fire, but a falling limb struck him in the head.

EMS treated him at the scene for a minor head injury.

KU crews had to come out and cut power to the home so fire crews could safely battle the flames.

Firefighters were still working to put out the fire at 4:30 a.m.
