Investigators say a lightning strike caused a Bourbon County house to catch fire Monday with an elderly woman inside.
The fire broke out just after noon on Stone Road near North Middletown.
According to the Bourbon County Fire Department, the woman living in the home was sitting at her kitchen table when the lightning hit.
"She heard a loud bang or a pop," said Chief Jeff McFarland with the North Middletown Fire Department. "Her gas heating furnace that's wall mounted actually blew off the wall."
"Dispatch told us something in the backyard had been struck but when we got here, we found the back part of the house was on fire from the outside," Chief McFarland said.
Crews had the fire put out fairly quickly. Inside of the house, some materials were found smoldering, but overall it was the outside that saw the brunt of the damage. That damage was given a temporary fix by mid-afternoon, covered by a tarp.
The woman living in the home was not hurt.
