Falling temperatures sent those without homes into local shelters late Wednesday and early Thursday, but one Lexington charity says that means they are already out of one necessity - blankets.
The new Community Inn On Winchester is set to experience it's first winter. As temperatures drop below freezing, even those taking shelter inside the inn in Lexington need help. Their biggest need right now is blankets. Organizers say it's because they're filling to capacity every single night, a total of 75 people sleeping over, and they're having to turn people away.
Shelter organizers say the down economy and a lack of jobs is directly affecting the number of people who are approaching them for help.
"This sudden cold has taken us, not by surprise I guess, it is December, but the needs the people have had in the community leading up to this," said organizer Ginny Ramsey. "We are out of blankets. We are desperate for blankets at God's Net, where we give to the community. People who are getting by without heat, and may have moved and don't have blankets."
The shelter is hoping that instead of sharing frivolous gifts this holiday season you'll give a gift card that helps someone who needs it most.
