A Madison County man who admitted he tried to murder his wife by giving her rat poison disguised in a cup of coffee was sentenced in the case Friday.
William Cain, 56, was originally charged with attempted murder after his wife, Deborah Cain told police he made her some coffee last summer then left the house. She says the coffee looked dark green and she found a residue at the bottom of the pot. She then called a friend and then police, who found her husband at a neighbor's home. According to a police citation, William Cain admitted putting the poison in the coffee.
Cain, who entered a guilty plea to the lesser charge of first-degree attempted manslaughter in January, was sentenced to 6 1/2 years in prison. He was denied probation.
Deborah Cain told LEX 18 after the guilty plea that she got word her husband was going to poison her five days before so her guard was up.
