Man Charged In Alleged Lexington DUI Death Pleads Not Guilty

A man police say was driving drunk when he ran over and killed a man who had passed out on a Lexington road over the weekend pleaded not guilty in the case Monday.

The incident happened at around 3:30 a.m. after police received a call about a man who was passed out in the road on Old Frankfort Pike, near Elkchester Road. A short time later, the caller said that person had just been struck by a vehicle.

Police say the victim has stopped his Ford Expedition in the northbound lane, got out of the vehicle and gotten sick in the roadway, before passing out while lying in the southbound lane. That's when a Honda Civic ran over the victim causing severe injuries. That man was taken to UK Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the Civic, William McCane, faces multiple charges, including reckless homicide and DUI. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, for both the victim and the driver. The victim's name has not been released.

McCane's next court appearance is scheduled for August 16. He is being held in the Fayette County Detention Center on $6,300 bond.
