The man charged with murdering a Pike County sheriff's deputy in January has reached a plea deal with prosecutors in the case.
David Childers was charged with murder in the death of Pike County deputy James Thacker, 53. Police say Childers crossed the center line on January 23 on U.S. 460 in Belcher and crashed his SUV into deputy Thacker's cruiser.
In the plea deal, Childers' murder charge was amended to second-degree manslaughter. He also pleaded guilty to being a persistent felony offender.
The prosecution recommended a 20-year prison sentence for Childers. Formal sentencing is set for November 9.
Childers is being held at the Pike County Detention Center.
