A death sentence has been avoided for a man found guilty of murdering a Lexington man.
Joseph Banis was convicted of killing Jamie Carroll in 2009. Carroll was shot, stabbed and his knees were broken with a sledgehammer so his body could be stuffed into a plastic container.
The container was then buried in the basement of the old Louisville home Banis shared with his boyfriend.
In court Monday, Banis agreed to waive his appeal of his murder conviction in the deal, which calls for him to receive a life sentence with eligibility for parole in 20 years.
