Police have confirmed a fatality in an accident between two pickup trucks in Madison County Thursday afternoon.
The accident happened at about 1:30 p.m. on Kentucky 21 near Berea. Police say a Ford pickup truck was heading east and crossed the center line. The Estill County man tried to swerve back, but it was too late and he struck a Chevrolet pickup carrying an older couple from Jackson County nearly head-on.
The older man and woman were taken to a Berea hospital and then flown to UK Hospital with critical injuries. LEX 18 learned at about 3 p.m. the man in the Chevrolet died from his injuries, and his wife was still in serious to critical condition.
The other driver had less serious injuries, but was also flown to UK Hospital.
Investigators say the driver of the Ford was alert on scene, and told deputies that he was briefly distracted reaching for a pack of cigarettes. A witness told LEX18 he tried to swerve back into his lane, but it was too late.
