A Lexington man was sentenced to three years in prison Friday for beating a toddler so badly his skull was cracked in half.

Kerry Kenney's admitted to beating his former girlfriend's son, Quisey, who is now four, back in 2008.

Quisey was in a coma ,had broken bones and a skull fracture following the beating. The little boy now has a brain injury, barely recognizes his name and has to wear a helmet.

"I'll never let nobody hold him down," said Jessica Thompson, the boy's mother. "I'll never let someone say he's special or he need this. I will treat him as he's normal because if I treat him like there's something wrong with him he'll think that for the rest of his life."

The family hopes his brain damage isn't permanent, but doctors say it's still too early to tell.

The judge is requiring Kenney to write a detailed letter to Thompson and her mother, describing exactly what went on the night of the beating.
