Man Trades Shots With Suspected Burglars

A retired Lexington Police Department safety officer traded gunshots with suspected burglars in Lexington early Tuesday morning.

Jim Green says he went to pick up his wife at the Red Cross center on Newtown Pike. As he was leaving just after midnight, he noticed a shed door ajar that wasn't open when he pulled in. He spotted a man nearby and followed him. That's when a second man fired.

"I just seen the flash and heard the pop. And I guess he picked the wrong one to fire the shot at. So, I shot back. I didn't shoot at him; I shot at the side of the truck. But...that's all it took," Green said.

The men sped off in a 4X4 pickup with an extended cab.

When police arrived, they found somebody had pried open the shed door. Officers say they aren't sure what, if anything, the burglars got away with.
