A Madison County man who made a surprise guilty plea last month in the murder of his mother and girlfriend made was sentenced in the case Wednesday.

John Payne 38, was set to go to trial next April. He was accused of shooting his mother, Cornelia Gayle Mullins, and girlfriend, Meredith King, 32, to death back in 2010.

Payne was sentenced to life in prison with parole eligibility in 25 years.
