Ingredients

3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup shortening
1/2 cup maple syrup
1 egg
2 1/4 cups all purpose flour
1/1/4 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon

Directons

Preheat oven to 350. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper. In a large bowl, combine 3/4 cup sugar,shortening,maple syrup and egg, mix well. Sift together flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon,cloves and salt, and add to egg mixture. If necessary, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate 1 to 2 hours for easier handling.

In a small bowl, combine 1/4 cup sugar and 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon. Shape dough into 1 inch balls and roll in sugar-cinnamon mixture. Place 2 inches apart on cookie sheet. Bake for 7 to 10 minutes or until light brown. Cool 1 minute then remove from cookie sheets and cool on racks. Makes 5 dozen.
