Julius Mays comes to Kentucky with plenty of college experience under his belt. The senior transferred from Wright State having already played three years of college ball.
But he admits, playing at Kentucky under Cal is a whole different ballgame.
It doesn't help that he came to the first practice admittedly a little out of shape. Tuesday was the fifth team workout, but Mays missed the first four.
"Just a little tough right now. I'm a couple of weeks behind as far as being in shape. I feel like once I get in shape, it will be a lot easier," he said in an interview on CoachCal.com.
Mays says the lack of stamina leads to mistakes on the court.
"Sometimes I make fatigue decisions. Just learning, you know? I gotta learn fast since I am a couple of weeks behind, but like I say, I feel like when I get in tip-top shape in a couple of weeks, I'll be fine."
Mays says Kentucky's style makes getting in shape quickly that much more important.
"The style of play here is up and down, so obviously we've got to do a lot of running to be in shape to play that style. So, you know, when you come in a couple of weeks behind, it shows once you get with guys who've been here a couple of weeks ahead of you, who've been going through things. But like I said, I'll be fine once I get in shape."
