Mercer County earned its second straight 12th Region baseball title with a 7-5 victory over Danville Thursday evening.
But this was a far different team than the one that took the title last season. Mercer County graduated eight seniors from that championship team.
The Titans trailed 5-3 going into the bottom of the final inning but rallied for four runs and the win over the 13th ranked Admirals. A walk-off homerun by J.T. Long capped the comeback. The sophomore ripped the first pitch he faced off the scoreboard in left-center field with two runners on base.
Back-to-back singles with one out by Alex Guay and John Ingram set things up. Seth Heath hit an RBI single to pull Mercer County to within one and Guay scored on an error to tie things up.
Danville scattered its runs across six innings, scoring one each in the first, third, fifth, sixth and seventh. The Admirals finished with seven hits and three error.
The Titans will face a tough one in the opening round of the Kentucky National Insurance/KHSAA State Baseball Tournament. Mercer County will take on the winner in the Seventh Region - either No. 3 St. Xavier of No. 7 Male.
