MSU Student Shot and Killed, Police Charge Man With Murder

Rowan County Coroner confirmed Thursday night that 21-year-old Cassandra Owens' death was due to multiple gunshot wounds. The coroner says she was killed Wednesday morning.

Casey Shay, 26, is charged with her murder. Police say Shay turned himself into the Rowan County Detention Center Thursday afternoon, and admitted to shooting and killing Owens.

"Officers were able to find all as dictated to us and the gentleman confessed to the crime. The investigation is fairly complete because we've got the scene, we've got a person charged, and he's in jail."

Police say they are still investigating why Shay shot Owens, and that there didn't appear to be a fight between the two.

Investigators say Owens was shot twice in her bedroom, in her trailer off Cristian Street in Morehead.

The coroner says Shay and Owens have a young daughter together. Police say she was not harmed in the incident and is staying with a grandparent.

Shay has been booked in the Rowan County Detention Center, with no bond.

Owens was a sophomore at Morehead State University.
