Joker Phillips says don't read in to this about who may be starting on Saturday. But we do know one thing on Tuesday, Maxwell Smith took all the snaps.
Phillips said after practice that starting tailback CoShik Williams and starting defensive lineman Donte Rumph did not practice because of injuries, but are hopeful to return to practice on Wednesday. Wide receiver La'Rod King practiced but was held out of contact. Phillips said quarterback Morgan Newton was "very limited" and is still nursing the ankle he injured in last Saturday's game vs. Mississippi State.
All the first-team snaps went to true freshman quarterback Maxwell Smith.
"Max got all the No. 1 reps today and I think that he did a good job," Phillips said. "One of the things that we have had issues with is getting signals and getting up to the line and I thought he did that a lot better today," said Joker.
Offensive coordinator Randy Sanders knows there's going to be growing pains. He says he has to remind himself all the time that Max is a true freshman. While he didn't do everything right Saturday, Sanders is convinced that Smith can handle the job. It almost sounded like that's his pick for the starting spot.
"It's exciting for the future. It's exciting for what he can become. Hopefully the future comes this Saturday. Hopefully he takes another step and gets on the right track, or stays on the right track, towards becoming a really good player because I think he can be a good player," said Sanders.
