A former Kentucky politician charged with killing his ex-girlfriend has been moved from the Fayette County Detention Center to the Kentucky Correctional Psychiatric Center in La Grange for a month-long psychiatric evaluation.
Steve Nunn is charged with murder in the September 11 shooting death of Amanda Ross, 29. Police say Nunn shot Ross shot to death outside her Lexington home.
The evaluation was requested by Nunn's lawyer, Astrida Lemkins, in a motion filed with the court last month.
Nunn has pleaded not guilty in the killing. He was arrested hours after the shooting near his parents' graves at a Hart County cemetery, and officers reported he had self-inflicted wrist wounds.
Nunn lived with Ross for several months until earlier this year when she obtained a protective order to keep him away. Fayette County court records show that Ross had a protective order issued stemming from a domestic violence charge against Nunn that was in effect through March 2010. The order also required that Nunn not possess any firearms.
Nunn, the son of former Republican Gov. Louie Nunn, served in the state legislature for 15 years. He lost a bid for the GOP gubernatorial nomination in 2003, then was ousted from the state House when he lost his re-election bid in 2006.
He is also accused of firing a shot from a .38 caliber revolver near police officers who approached him at the cemetery.
