A Nicholasville police officer shot in the line of duty last year was honored by fellow officers and community leaders Monday night.
Officer John Rainey became a member of the "Safariland Saves Club." The group honors officer saved by the body armor the company makes.
Last October, Rainey was on patrol when he noticed a suspicious person. When he got out of his car, somebody fired a shot. His ballistic vest stopped the bullet.
"Seventeen years, and I guess if your number is up, your number is up to be in a gun fight. And luckily, I didn't let him get the best of me," he said. "My training kicked in. I chased after him, exchanged gun fire a few more times, about three or four times."
Police continue to search for that shooter. There is a $16,000 reward offered for information.
