Lexington Fire Department officials say damage done by a copper thief likely caused the explosion that leveled a Lexington home early Monday morning.
Officials say somebody stealing copper inside the vacant house along Campbell Street knocked over a hot water heater in back of the home. The falling heater damaged a gas pipe, causing a leak, which led to the explosion.
The blast rocked the neighborhood near Transylvania University around 1 a.m. Nobody was injured and no nearby homes sustained any significant damage.
