Officials say a Lexington house fire was likely purposefully set.

A driver passing by spotted the fire burning in a home on Fifth Street at Julia Way around 12:45 a.m. Wednesday. Firefighters say flames were shooting through the roof when they arrived on the scene. Crews were able to get the blaze under control quickly.

"We were able to make a search and confirm that there was no one home, so no one injured from the fire," Lexington Fire Department Battalion Chief Brent Frizzell said.

Neighbors say the people who live in the house are on vacation.

Officials say the fire started in the kitchen. They say the blaze was likely set to cover up a burglary.
