Two former caregivers at a Carter County nursing home who pleaded guilty last month to their roles in the abuse of a patient were sentenced Wednesday in the case.
Todd Gribbens and Earl Pelphrey pleaded guilty to several charges on December 4 in Carter County circuit court. The two were indicted in 2007 in connection with the abuse of Michael Price, a mentally-handicapped adult who was being cared for at Community Presence, Inc.
As part of the plea agreement, both men received one year for wantonly abusing an adult, first-degree wanton endangerment and first-degree unlawful imprisonment. The sentences will be diverted for a period of five years. Both also were ordered to never again be employed as caregivers of vulnerable adults or children, and also agreed to cooperate with the investigation into other staff members at the same facility.
Two other men were sent to prison for causing Price's death in the incident.
