A Kentucky miner died Thursday from injuries suffered in an underground mining accident at the Leeco 68 mine in the community of Jeff in Perry County.

The mine is owned by James River Coal. 29-year-old Bobby L. Smith of Vicco was taken to the Appalachian Regional Healthcare in Hazard, where he was pronounced dead.

The accident was reported to state officials at about 1:30 p.m

Officials from the Kentucky Office of Mine Safety and Licensing (OMSL) and the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration will investigate.

This is the fifth mine-related fatality in Kentucky this year.
