Lexington police say they need help finding a jewelery thief.

Police say a man came to Gem Source Incorporated on Southland Drive Wednesday afternoon looking for an engagement ring, but he swiped two rings and then left without paying. Employees chased the thief outside, and the suspect nearly ran them over as he sped off in a car. But witnesses did manage to get a license plate number.

"This gentleman did not know that this was a dead end street behind us and was going the wrong way to get out, so he had to make a U-turn, and that's how we got his license plate number," Jim Salyer said.

The suspect's car was a red Dodge Charger with Kentucky plates 435-FFS.
