LOUISVILLE (AP) - A new state program will educate and train minority and female workers for careers in construction, with an aim toward expanding the labor force for the upcoming Ohio River bridges project.

The program is called "Bridges to Opportunities," and it is seeking to fill a need for women workers in the bridges project, which will build two new spans across the river at Louisville.

Kentucky State University will administer the program and handle recruitment, enrollment, evaluation and basic skills training.

State transportation Secretary Mike Hancock said the massive bridges project is rare opportunity to equip women and minorities with the skills to serve the region for decades.

The program will help enroll participants in existing training offered by Jefferson Community and Technical College, local labor unions and other institutions.
