A death investigation is underway in Breathitt County after the remains of two people were found in a burned vehicle.
The gruesome discovery was made Saturday night just off Kentucky 1098 at Southfork near Elk View.
Police told LEX 18, they have reason to believe the two are a couple from Michigan who were in town visiting family. The pair had been reported missing shortly before the remains were found.
The problem, according to police, is that the bodies, likely those of a man and a woman, were burned beyond recognition, making them impossible to identify on the scene.
"It's just sad. Two lives are ended and probably for no reason at all," said Iva Fugate, who lives near the scene.
"It's really scary because everybody's friends up through here," said another neighbor, Tina Napier.
While investigators have labeled this a "death investigation," they add they are looking into the possibility of a homicide.
"Bad things like this happen and it just kind of scares you," James Cardona, who also lives near the scene. "What's gonna happen next, if something happened like this?"
Investigators have not commented on any suspects or persons of interest.
The car and the remains have been taken to Frankfort. Autopsies are scheduled for Monday morning.
