Police flooded into a Lexington neighborhood early Wednesday morning after a reported shooting, but the whole thing turned out to be a hoax.

Dispatchers received a message from a relay service used by the deaf just after midnight. The person reported a man with a gun was fighting with his son, who was armed with a bat, at a home along Abbington Hill. A short time later, dispatchers received an update that the man had shot his son.

Officers spread out searching for the shooter, while firefighters staged to treat the victim. But when officers spoke to people at the home, they had no idea what was going on. Police say after interviewing a boy who lives there, police determined other kids the same age might have targeted the home as a hoax.
