MT VERNON (AP) - The Rockcastle County clerk is asking state police to investigate after an audit could not account for nearly $4,000.
The Lexington Herald-Leader reports the audit was released Thursday. It found nearly $4,000 in receipts for chattel mortgages that were never deposited in a bank.
Auditors also found that receipts for chattel mortgages in 2010 were nearly $5,000 less than would be expected based on the number of mortgages issued.
The audit said one deputy clerk was in charge of collecting, recording and accounting for chattel mortgage receipts. There was no independent check on the accuracy of that clerk's work.
County Clerk Danetta Ford Allen said she has now assigned another employee to double-check chattel mortgage receipts. She also asked state police to investigate.
