The roof of a business collapsed Monday evening during a storm that hit northern Lexington.
The roof of Joe's Mini Food Mart on East Loudon collapsed around 7:45 p.m., about 15 minutes before the store closes. Two employees, Jesse and Matthew Rayyan, and one customer were inside, and they all escaped unharmed. The customer was hit with a brick, but was not hurt.
"It was raining really hard, and it felt like someone was jumping on the roof, and the beams started collapsing," says Jesse Rayyan, whose father owns the store.
"We were going to turn off the breaker, but there was no time. I knew it was coming down, so we all ran out," said Matthew Rayyan.
"We shut the doors and got out as fast as we could and then it collapsed," says Jesse Rayyan,
"It was literally the nick of time. We were lucky."
A family lives in an apartment in the back of the building and will have to evacuate for the time being since the building is now condemned.
Firefighters say the roof of Joe's Mini Food Mart fell due to heavy rain over a long period of time, but one customer said the roof had been leaking for a while.
The Fire Department says a contractor will come in to clear the debris and secure the building.
