A Rowan County mother and daughter remain hospitalized after a fire that killed a 5-year-old boy last month.

Lottie Lyons Pennington and her daughter, Jessica, were critically burned in the Dec. 20 fire. Her son, Edward, died, and two other children and their father, James, also suffered injuries.

One of the daughters says her mother was trying to light a kerosene heater when the fire started.
