Donald Russell is off limits to the media because his mother complained to the media about her son not being given a chance to play. As far as the conversation between Russell's mother and head coach Joker Phillips?
"That's in house," says UK's coach. "That's in house. I'll never discuss my conversations with any parent or players when we have those type of discussions."
Tailback Derrick Locke and his backup Raymond Sanders are banged up. They might play Saturday, though Sanders couldn't even practice on Thursday.
Dealing with parents is a bigger part of Phillips' job than he talks about. With the media, he's calm and cool about this issue.
"I can't keep parents off the twitter," said Phillips. "I can keep players off twitter. It's no big deal. It's the day and age we are in. When I read the Bear Bryant coaching book 101 he didn't have a section in there with how to deal with some of the things. Maybe I'll be the guy who will write those things. It's the day and age we are in."
There are a lot more stories about a Donald Russell and a parent not being happy than we really know about because most of the time it's kept behind doors. And, isn't it ironic that the starting tailback for the Kentucky Wildcats is...
"Donald Russell," said Phillips. "Donald Russell will be the starter. And it's how this thing works. You just got to be patient so. You just got to be patient. And it always comes back to you. If you just continue to work it will come back to you. It's like a yo-yo isn't it."
Moncell Allen, whose done a terrific job as the starting fullback even though he waited for four years to become the starting tailback understands what Russell is going through.
"It's a business pretty much," said Allen. Patience is something players deal with and struggle with. "Of course," says UK's fullback.
"Just sitting there and not knowing what's going to happen with your position is definitely stressful for a person," said Allen. But at the same time you have to do for the team. Whatever is best for the team it's got to happen."
Russell can start making a claim to become the starting tailback next season with a big performance against Charleston Southern.
