An early morning warehouse fire destroyed seven businesses in Lexington Tuesday.

A mechanic working on a car at the warehouse along Price Avenue accidentally cut a fuel line around 12:30 a.m. It just took a spark to start a blaze that would eventually destroy the entire building. The mechanic ran inside to and saved a baby sleeping in the shop.

Nobody was injured, but a dog inside the warehouse died.

"Things happen, accidents happen, and that's all you can say. It was an accident and I'm glad nobody was hurt," property owner Don Cook said.

It took firefighters nearly five hours to put out the blaze. Flames reached high into the sky, casting an eerie glow over the neighborhood. Gasoline and oil inside the building fed the flames. The narrowness of Price Avenue and overhead power lines hampered firefighting efforts. KU had to shut off power in the area in order for crews to raise aerial ladders.

Firefighters had to evacuate some nearby homes due to the intensity of the flames. At least one of the houses sustained minor damage as siding melted in the heat.

"To sit there and watch your 13 years being burnt. Not much you can say about it. What happened is going to happen. Nothing you can do to stop it. Once it's gone, it's gone," Cook said.
