DELBARTON, W.Va. (AP) - Slain southern West Virginia Sheriff Eugene Crum is being remembered for his warmth, kindness and mission to eradicate illegal drugs in Mingo County.
Hundreds of mourners packed Mingo Central High School near Delbarton on Sunday for Crum's funeral.
A U.S. flag draped Crum's open casket, surrounded by dozens of colorful flower arrangements.
The 59-year-old Mingo County sheriff was shot to death on Wednesday as he ate lunch in a downtown Williamson parking lot. Crum had been in office just three months before he was killed.
Mingo County Circuit Court Judge Michael Thornsbury delivered the eulogy, saying that Crum was a hero to many.
Police charged 37-year-old Tennis Melvin Maynard with murder in Crum's death. The motive for his death is still unclear.
