Firefighters responded after alarms sounded and a police officer nearby smelled smoke coming from the Jif peanut butter plant on Winchester Road early Tuesday morning.
Officials say a small fire lit up inside one of the plant's roasters just before 3 a.m. The company's own fire brigade extinguished the flames, and Lexington firefighters cleared the scene shortly after arriving.
"They do have their own fire brigade, and they do a really good job of keeping their business in check in terms of the small fires they occasionally have in their roasters," Lexington Fire Department Major Mark Harvey said. "Police called us out so we could check it."
There were no reports of damage. Just some light smoke in the building.
