Students at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School showed up to school Tuesday wearing t-shirts in support of a school resource officer under investigation after a YouTube video surfaced showing him apparently punching a student while breaking up a fight.
LEX 18 talked to about 15 students wearing "Free Officer Sharp" t-shirts, but more than 200 students have joined a Facebook page supporting the officer.
The incident happened at about 8:30 a.m. Thursday just outside the school's cafeteria. The video appears to show resource officer Michael Sharp, who has been at the school for about three years, striking one of the students as he helps pull them apart.
Sharp has been suspended with pay as the investigation continues. School officials said they would not comment about the incident until the investigation is concluded.
But some students say there is more to the video. They say the officer was hit in the face twice before the widely shown clip. They call Sharp a great office and a good role model, and they say they feel safe with him working in the school.
