FRANKFORT (AP) - Kentucky lawmakers are considering forming a task force to study possible flaws in the state's death penalty system and halting executions while the panel does its work.
Members of the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday said a bill creating the panel will likely come up this session. The move for a task force comes a month after members of a team put together by the American Bar Association called for a halt to executions in Kentucky because of a high error rate and other issues with the way capital cases are handled.
Rep. Brent Yonts, D-Greenville, expects lawmakers to tackle the issue during the session but was unsure whether it would pass.
The state is currently barred from carrying out executions by a judge's order.
