A Kentucky State Trooper transporting a prisoner crashed his cruiser into a tree in Grant County early Thursday morning.

Police say Trooper Ron Gilbert, 45, was taking Justin M. Malott, 19, to the Grant County Detention Center around 1:30 a.m. He was driving along Taft Highway, about five miles west of Dry Ridge, when he lost control of his cruiser on a curve, slid off the road and crashed into a tree.

Dry Ridge EMS took Gilbert and Malott to St. Elizabeth Grant County Hospital where they were both treated for minor injuries and released.

Once released from the hospital, police took Malott on to jail and charged him with service of a felony warrant.

The accident remains under investigation.
