Superstorm Sandy left death and destruction in her wake.

The sight of the iconic New Jersey amusement park pier at Seaside Heights washed out to sea encapsulates the devastation. Half of the pier was washed away, pushing amusement park rides into the ocean. The Star Jet roller coaster remains intact, but now stands several hundred yards out in the surf.

The wind and waves smashed homes along the Jersey Shore and buried others under piles of sand.

About 2.1 million homes and businesses remained powerless across the Garden State late Tuesday.
