MURRAY, Ky. (AP) - A professor at Murray State University has been suspended following an allegation that he made a racial remark to a black student.

The university told WPSD-TV in Paducah that political science professor Mark Wattier is on unpaid suspension.

Freshman Arlene Johnson told the station that Wattier started class early last semester and she questioned him about it when she arrived on time. Johnson says Wattier responded by saying slaves never showed up on time.

Johnson dropped the class and filed a complaint with the university.

Wattier has appealed his suspension. He sent WPSD a letter from his doctor, stating he met the criteria for depression.
